AIR TRAINEE
DROWNED IN RIVER
L.A.C. HORACE GEORGE WILLIAMS, aged 19 years, an Air Force Trainee, was drowned in the Edward River on December 24. Williams, in company with John Nicholas Walsh,  R.A.A. F., went to the Brewery Bend for a swim about 2 p.m. on the date named. Some time afterwards they decided to swim across the river to the north side. When about three  parts of the way over, Williams, who was not a strong swimmer, apparently became exhausted, and sank. Many swimmers congregated at the scene of the fatality and dived for  the body for several hours, but failed to locate the victim. Throughout Christmas day diving and dragging were continued, and it was not until 8.30 a.m. on Saturday that  Williams' body was found in deep water caught in the roots of a tree.
Williams formerly lived at Hawthorn (V.) before joining the Air Force. He was a single man. The body was buried in the local War Cemetery on Sunday, December 27.
