From How We Served
The final resting place for; - 19604 & V375022 Lt Stewart Andrew William Wood of Caulfield East and Hughesdale, Victoria, who prior to his enlistment for War Service on the 27th of January 1916 had been employed as a salesman.
Stewart was allocated to the 8th Field Artillery Brigade 1st AIF and was embarked for England and further training on the 20th of May.
Having completed his training phase Stewart was shipped over to France where he arrived on the 30th of December. From the time of his arrival, Stewart’s service in the field would be continuous, until he was wounded in action by a gunshot injuries to the right buttock on the 6th of August 1917.
Following brief hospitalization at Etaples, Stewart was returned to England, and was admitted into the 1st London General Hospital on the 11th of August, before being transferred to the 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital (Harefield) on the 5th of September.
After having completed hospital treatment, Stewart was sent to the 2nd Convalescent Depot at Weymouth, before being deemed no longer fit for service in the trenches.
Stewart began his repatriation back to Australia as an invalid, departing England on the 30th of January 1918. Having returned to Australia, Stewart was admitted into the 11th Australian General Hospital (Caulfield) for further treatment before receiving his official discharge from the 1st AIF, for his return into civilian life, on the 23rd of May 1918.
With the outbreak of a Second World War, Stewart again presented himself for enlistment with the Australian Military Forces on the 4th of April 1942, and after being accepted for Home Service he joined the Volunteer Defense Corps.
Stewart received the commissioned rank of Lieutenant and was allocated to ‘C’ Company, 5th Battalion VDC. Whilst still in the service of the Australian Military Forces, Stewart’s untimely death, due to illness, occurred on the 5th of August 1943. He was aged 45.
