Button was killed "in what was practically the first fight of the Tasmanians" during the Boer War.
His younger brother, 132 Corporal James Button 40th Battalion AIF was killed in action at Passchendaele 13 October 1917.
Two other brothers enlisted at the same time in the 40th Battalion and returned to Australia in mid 1919, 134 Ernest John Button and 111 Herbert James Button.
