Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When Matthew Geaney enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as John Geaney, Mile End, Warwick. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB, Bk 2 p. 26, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his father Mr. J. P. Geaney, Mile End, Warwick.

Matthew Geaney was born about 1879, it is assumed in Queensland, a son to John Patrick Geaney and Hannah Geaney (nee Manley).

The Allora Historical Society posted an online "Tribute to Boer War Servicemen - Matthew Geaney" (see links for full tribute) from which the following information is extracted.

In 1903, returned servicemen and local members of the volunteer defence forces in Allora, erected a monument to the memory of local soldiers who fell in the South African war. Matthew Geaney was one of the four local men who died.

He was one of 6 children of John Patrick and Hannah Geaney who migrated from Ireland to Queensland in 1863. When Matthew enlisted on 21 Feb 1901 he; was single and 30 years old; working as an engine driver; and was living at Mile End, Warwick.
