Private Cumming was the son of Mr. W. Cumming, of drayton Road and Harrow and was a fine manly youth. the deepest sympathy is also manifested with the unfortunate young man's realtives.

When Robert Ross Cumming enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as Miss M. Cumming, Toowoomba. In the original nominal roll for the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by National Archives, his N.O.K. is recorded as being his sister. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 3 p. 140, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. J. Cumming, Boundary St, Toowoomba.
Robert Ross Cumming was born on 10 Jan 1875 in Queensland, a son to William Kirk Cumming and Johanna Cumming (nee Ross).
