Ernest Townsend JUCHAU was born on 19th June, 1874 in "Vermont Vale" Chilcotts Creek, Murrurundi NSW
His parents were James JUCHAU and Sarah Emma WILLIAMS
He joined the 6th Queensland Bushmens Rifles along with his cousin Percy James JUCHAU.
They left Australia on the 4th April, 1901 on the ship S.S. Victoria and arrived in Durban, South Africa on 7th May, 1901. They proceeded to Standerson where they were placed in Lt. Co. R Greys column which also had the 7th New Zealand Mounted Rifles. They were under the command of Lt. Col. H.F. White. They proceeded north to Ermelo where they were taken over by Lt Col Garratt at the end of June 1901.. All the time they were subject to sniper fire. They operated south of Johannesburg until the end of July then moved into the Eastern Transvaal during September, October & November (when Ernest died of pneumonia)
Ernest died on 21st October 1901 in Pietersburg, South Africa from pneumonia
Buried in Pietersburg General Cemetery - He is also Memoralized in the Australian War Memorial

Death at the Front
A cablegram from London dated October 27th states that Private E.T. Juchau of the 6th Queensland Contingent (Bushmen) has died from pneumonia at Paul Pietersburg. Private E.T. Juchau was a son of Mr. James Juchau ,resident in Queensland, a grandson of Mrs. Juchau of Hay NSW and a nephew of Mrs. C.F. Juchau of Murrurundi. He was the eldest surviving son of Mr. James Juchau and was about 27 years of age. Genuine sympathy is felt with his relatives in their bereavement
