Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When John MacFarlane enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his photo was published with the Rank and File in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father J. B. MacFarlane, Sherwood. In the Boer War Service Paybooks of the 5th QIB held by the Qld State Archives he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. M. MacFarlane (Mary MacFarlane nee O'Neill), Sherwood.

After he was killed in action at Onverwacht and buried in South Africa, his friends erected a memorial for him, and Sgt Robert Edwin Berry who was also killed in action, at St Matthews Anglican Cemetery, Sherwood, Qld- see photo on alternate Find A Grave memorial link.
