Francis MAXWELL was born on 14th December, 1870 place unknown - he came from Mt Garnet in Queensland and was a leaseholder on the Alpha Station - his address was given as care of the Bank of New South Wales in Adelaide, South Australia

He enlisted as a Private with the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen on 19th April, 1900 and embarked on 18th May, 1900 on the ship SS Manchester Port to serve in the Boer War

He was promoted to Sergeant on 1st June, 1900 and was Killed in Action at Hammans Kraal on 17th July, 1900 while trying to save a comrade who had been injured along with his horse

Francis was buried at Hammans Kraal where he died and a wooden cross in his memory was erected by fellow troopers
