Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Alfred Ernest Pooley was born on 26 Sep 1866 at Reading, Berkshire, England, a son to Charles Pooley and Elizabeth Simmons Pooley (nee Butler). It hasn't been confirmed when he arrived in Australia but he married Cecilia Vera Cullinan (aged 17) in 1891 at Sydney, NSW.

He served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service was as a Private (rising to Sergeant-Major) S.N. 223 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. He remained in South Africa and enrolled for his second service serving as a Lieutenant with the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. During his second service he was killed in action.
