"A MESSAGE FROM THE SECOND CONTINGENT LADS.
A letter has been received from Mr. Wm. Mitchell, jun., of Agnes River, Toora, Victoria, forwarding the undermentioned message from a number of members of the Second Queensland Contingent. The message was written on board the steamer Maori King, and dated 20th January. It was placed in a bottle and thrown overboard somewhere between Sydney and Melbourne, and was picked up on the western shore of Wilson's Promontory on the 1st of June, after more than a four months' buffeting by the ocean waves. The message was signed by the following :-J. Daly, Toowoomba ; C. Reimers, . Stanthorpe ; N. M'Donald, Stanthorpe ; R. H. Locke, Brisbane ; R. H. T. Blunt, London ; and R. Walsh, Stanthorpe, and ran :-Left Sydney 16th January, had splendid voyage so far ; expect to arrive in Melbourne 21st. All's well. Love to all Queensland girls. P.S.-Should this note be found, please forward to Queensland Press."

2 Jul 1900 Newspaper clipping
From a soldier.
"Wet weather visited us during Rest Camp, and as the site was particularly badly chosen, much inconvenience and sickness resulted. Cases of enteric increased. At one time there was quite fifteen per cent of our strength in hospital. Two deaths have so far occurred ---Cronau, of whom I think you were previously advised, and Private Reimers, of Stanthorpe. Both were very decent young fellows, of a strong hardy type, quite the last you would expect to succumb to sickness. Personally the country agrees with me well. I have not known indisposition since I was seasick on the stinking old Maori King."
