Herbert John White was a Queenslander. Herbie as he was known, was the son of John and Agnes White (nee Younger). He was born in 1878.
Herbie excelled at sport at school and subsequenly as an adult. He was captain of Mount Morgan's Zingari Junior Football Tream. Zingari means "Gypsies" in Italion. The term was first used in 1845 for cricket clubs without a home ground. Herbie played cricket during the off season.
However, when he was 22 years old, Herbie enlisted to fight for Empire along a few of his mates from Mount Morgan. They served in the Fifth Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contigent. Herbie accidently killed six days after celebrating his 23rd birthay in South Africa.
Rockhampton's Morning Bulletin Newspaper published his obit on 2nd May 1901. He was accidently shot and killed by one of his own mates as per that source.
