"Five Diggers die, six hurt
Four Australian soldiers were killed in action, another was killed accidentally and six were wounded during operations against enemy forces in Phuoc Tuy Province, South Vietnam, on Sunday. Army headquarters in Canberra said that five of the wounded were evacuated to the 1st Australian Field Hospital, Vung Tau, where they were in satisfactory or very satisfactory condition. The other was in a satisfactory condition in 24 Evacuation Hospital, Long Binh. All the casualties were members of 9th Battalion, the Royal Australan Regiment.
Savage actions
NUI DAT, Monday (AAP). — In a series of short, savage actions throughout yesterday morning, Australian troops killed at least seven Vietcong and wounded four, taking two of them prisoner. The Australians, all from 9th Battalion, RAR, clashed with small groups of enemy in eight separate actions before noon. Battalion patrols were covering a suspected area of enemy infiltration about 20 miles north-west of Nui Dat, on the edge of Bien Hoa province. The Vietcong returned the Australian fire with rockets and machineguns before retreating into thick undergrowth. In one action, an ambush by B Company, made contact with what was believed to be 20 enemy. The company killed a North Vietnamese regular, wounded and captured a Vietcong captain and recovered Chinese-made weapons. In another engagement, elements of B Company encountered 10 enemy, killing four and wounding one. The soldier accidentally killed was Corporal Harold Robert Musicka, 23, national serviceman, married, of Smithfield Plains, South Australia. The wounded soldiers are: Private Neil Robert Smith, 22, single, of Newtown, Tasmania; Private Robert William Gale, 22, national serviceman, single, of Sherwood, Queensland; Lance-Corporal Mark Ardroy Rose, 23, single, of Carnegie, Victoria; Private David John French, 23, national serviceman, married, of Peachester, via Beewah, Queensland; Private Eric Parkinson, 20, single, of Laverton, Victoria; and Private Selwyn Lester Rogers, 22, national serviceman, single, of Schudleigh, via Launceston.
