Bill was the eldest son of Wilfred Lindsay ("Lin") and Iris Mary Nalder.  In total they had nine children and all (but one) who reached maturity served in the Australian military, or married someone who did, or both.  Bill's parents met during WW2 when they were both serving.  Bill's father was originally in the 4/19 PWLH until a motorcycle accident rendered him unfit for active service.  He had the option of discharge or transfer.  He opted for transfer and served out the war in the Commonweath Investigation Branch, a forerunner of ASIO.  Bill's mother was in the Women's Auxilliary.

Of the younger siblings, Bill's sister, Valerie, served in the WRAAF and married a sailor - the youngest UN serviceman to fight in Korea.  Valerie later went on to become the first female prison governor in NSW.  Both Valerie's sons served in the military.  One in the RAN and the other in the ARA.

Bill's next youngest brother failed his national service medical, but the next two siblings (both girls) married 1RAR soldiers who served in Vietnam.

The next surviving sibling served 25 years in the ADF both as a soldier and a civlian.  His service included almost six years in the Infantry (4RAR, 2/4RAR and HQ6TF), plus ten years in the Australian Intelligence Corps (1 Div Int Unit, RAAF School of Languages, 7 Signal Regiment, JTUM, 72 EW Sqn, plus attachments) followed by ten years service as a Defence civilian in an intelligence organisation and some years in Reserves and the Emergency Reserve.

Bill was the apple of his mother's eye and a son to be proud of.  His service was a source of admiration for all his siblings and he set an exemplary example as a man, a brother and a son.
