Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Elder of the two brothers (Henry and John) who served in WWII, Private Henry George Conroy (Service No:VX72291) enlisted in the AIF on 15 January 1942 with AIF Details Depot and then 27 Labour Coy. Private Conroy was attached to 2/10th Infantry Battalion on 22 November 1942 when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for Milne Bay on board the Katoomba, and  embarked from Port Moresby on 22 March 1943 on board the Duntroon for Townsville, where he was hospitalised for treatment of Malaria. In December 1943 Private Conroy marched out to 4 Australian Ordnance Vehicle Park, and was attached to 2/10th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 9 December 1945.

Henry was born in Stawell, Victoria in 1905, second of three children of Thomas Conroy (b1853 in Sydney, New South Wales) and his second wife Jane Annie Osler (b 1881 in Dooboobetic, Victoria). Thomas (a Widower with six children) and Jane married in 1903 in Stawell, and lived at Fyans Creek via Stawell - Thomas was a Labourer until his death in 1906. Jane remarried in 1910 to James Elepious Duffy, and following his death at Gallipoli in 1915, remarried in 1916 to her older sister's Widower, Joseph Frederick Gowland. Jane and Joseph settled at Fyans Creek where they raised their family and Joseph was a Labourer. Jane raised nine of her own children.

Henry worked as a Labourer in Fyans Creek and in 1942 when he enlisted in the Army, was a Station Hand working at Glenloth via Wycheproof in Victoria. Following his Discharge from the Army in 1945, Henry returned to Stawell, where he settled and worked as a Labourer until retirement. Henry died in 1978.
