Biography contributed by Carol Potter

Although listed as Mervyn Cecil Potter, it was when he sent for his birth certificate he found his name was actually spelt Mervan, not Mervyn the commonly known way of spelling. All his life though he was named Chick as he was the youngest son of 11 children to Thomas and Alice Potter.

His birthdate was the 19th February 1927 not 18th February 1923 but he lied about his age so he could enlist with his older brothers (still aged just 14 years). His Father also tried unsuccessfully to enlist.

When he returned home 3 years later he had still not reached the allowable age of enlistement. Mervan died in 2008 after a life as a dairy farmer, husband, father and grandfather. He was 81 and my father-in-law.
