Gilbert was the tenth of eleven children of Gustav Hermann Schmidt (b1884 in Samsonvale, QLD) and Margaret (Maggie) Ann Bell (b1880 in Samsonvale, QLD). Gustav - a Labourer - and Maggie married in 1903 in Samsonvale, where they settled and raised their family. Gustav was a Labourer and Farmer. The family had moved to Kilcoy by 1919, and Gustav and Maggie were in Rochedale in the 1930s. In the 1940s they were living in Nanango where Gustav was a Labourer.
Gilbert was a Station Hand in 1941 when he enlisted in the ACMF (Service No:Q4324) when he enlisted in the ACMF in September 1941. He then enlisted in the Australian Army in March 1942, and was a Private (Service No:QX40008/Q4324) attached to 2/10 Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged in January 1946. Brother Hector Edmund (Corporal; Service No:QX19867) and Brother - in - Law Edward Robert Tones (Private; Service No:Q205476) served in WWII and brother Herbert (Bertie) Schmidt (Private; Service No:1400321) served in the Korean War.
In 1944 Gilbert married May Emma Tones (b1921 in Kilcoy, QLD) and they settled at Jimma where Gilbert was a Saw Mill Hand. In the mid 1950's they moved to Strathpine, where Gilbert worked as a Sawyer. May died in 2015 and Gilbert in 2017.
