Arthur Mervyn Bassingthwaighte.
Arthur Mervyn, 25th Battalion 1916, served in France in a machine gun section of 3 years. He stayed on in France after the end of the war in a moppin up force, working with mule teams. He was awarded the Military medal at Westhoek Ridge on the 20-9-1917 for conspicous gallantry during part of the Battle of Passchendaele. After the war he took up a soldier's settlement block, in the Chappingah area and called it "Passchendaele". Arthur was keen to remember his fallen comrades so he named his property after enduring the Battle of Passchendaele. He bred top quality Hereford cattle and sold weaners in January 1935 for $5-50 and in 1948 for $22-60, topping the sale at Farmer and Clark's sale yards, Jandowae, many times until his death in 1951.
