Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Corporal Arthur Joseph Askew (Service No:QX27789) enlisted in the AIF on 2 March 1942 as a Private with 7 Infantry Training Battalion, and served with 2/15th Infantry Battalion in the Middle East (22 August 1942 - 27 February 1943), New Guinea (28 July 1943 - 20 March 1944), and Borneo (1 May 1945 - 6 February 1946). Corporal Askew was attached to 2/15th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 19 June 1946). Younger siblings (Edward and Iris) also served in WWII.

Arthur was born in Brisbane, QLD in 1922, eldest of three children of Henry (Harry) Charles Askew (b1883 in Dalby, QLD) and Harriett May Budd (b1898 in Brisbane, QLD). Harry worked as a Labourer in Mackay, a Carter in Brisbane, and was a Collector/Dealer in Brisbane in 1922 when he and Harriett married. Harry lived in Brisbane, where he worked as a Dealer, Drayman and Labourer, and by the 1930s Harriett had settled in Bundaberg.

Arthur lived with his father in Brisbane, and was a Rubber Worker when he enlisted in the Army - following his father's death in 1944, he listed Dorothy Connolly (his Godmother) as NoK. In 1948 in Brisbane, Arthur married Beulah Mary Daly (b1919 in Brisbane, QLD) - Beulah was working as a Presser in Brisbane. Arthur and Beulah settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and Arthur was a Tailor. Arthur died in 1995 and Beulah in 2017.
