Son of Mathias Caffrey and Mary Ann Caffrey of Main Street, Gulgong, NSW. Brother of Herbert Caffrey who returned to Australia in 15 April 1918 having served with the 2nd Battalion

Commenced return to Australia 12 May 1919 aboard HT Port Napier disembarking on 5 July 1919
