Ken was the second of four children of Francis Gibson Barker (b1897 in Helidon, QLD) and first wife Margaret Caroline Tait (b1896 in Wellington Point, Brisbane, QLD). Francis (a Farmer) and Margaret (a Milliner) married in 1920 in Wellington Point, Brisbane QLD. Francis served in WWI (Private; Service No:1003). He and Margaret lived in Wellington Point and Toowoomba before settling in Brisbane in 1922. Francis worked as a Carter, Waterside Worker, Labourer and Truck Driver. He served in WWII (Lance Corporal; Service No:Q187509). Following Margaret's death in 1957 Francis remarried in 1958

Ken was a Labourer in Chermside, Brisbane in 1942 when he enlisted in the Australian Army (Private; Service Nos:QX41224/Q136017). He was attached to H2 Training Depot Goondiwindi when he was Discharged in November 1942.

Ken returned to Chermside, where he had a brief stint as a Farmer before working as a Grader Driver. He married Valerie (Val) May Grimley (b1933 in Brisbane, QLD) - Val was a Nurse living in Toombul when they married in the early 1950's. Ken and Val settled in Chermside, where Ken worked as a Grader Driver and Truck Driver. He died in 1992 and Val in 1994.
