Alfred appears to have moved to the Murgon area around 1920.  Married Annie Ellen Beatrice BARLING nee ALEXANDER in 1920.

Alfred was born in 1888 in Latrobe near Launceston, TAS to Alfred and Isabella Barling. He was the eldest of five children and worked as a teamster. He enlisted in the army at Claremont, TAS on the 29th March 1916, where his reported age was 27 years and 11 months.

Private Barling departed Hobart on board HMAT A35 Berrima on the 1st July 1916 with the 40th Battalion (D Company) as part of the 10th Brigade with a rank of Private however during his service rose through the ranks to Sergeant.

He returned to Australia on the 27th May 1919 and was discharged on the 19th September 1919 He was issued the 1914/1915 Star, British War Medal, and Victory Medal.

In 1920, he married Annie Ellen Beatrice Alexander in Queensland and had two children.

The Will of his father dated 1928 notes Alfred as a contractor at Yarraman Ck Qld.

At the age of 44 years old, Alfred re-enlisted into the army on 6th June 1942 at Yarraman, QLD and served in the 9th Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps in Queensland where he did part-time duty until October 1945.

Alfred passed away in 1957 aged 68 years old and is buried with his wife in the Murgon Cemetery, Queensland.

He is listed on the honour roll at the Charles Street State School in South Launceston, TAS
