74 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 9th January 1950, Lance Corporal John Riley, referred to as Jack, 56th Battalion (Reg No-3106), horse driver and wheeler from Little Gipps Street, Carrington, New South Wales and 8 Parnell Place, Newcastle, N.S.W., father of eight (Dorothy, Betty, Jack, Lillian, Bill, Oliver, Ruth & Leigha), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 54. ANGLICAN 3-182. 61.

Born at Carrington, New South Wales on the 27th August 1895 to Thomas, died 3.4.1911, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 51, from Little Bourke Street, Carrington, New South Wales, buried at CATHOLIC 1-M Com. 81, and Bridget Riley nee Hayes, died 19.8.1902, Newcastle, N.S.W., age?, from Little Bourke Street, Carrington, New South Wales, sleeping at CATHOLIC 1-M Com. 81; husband of Violet Rose Emily Riley nee Gottery (married 1920, Wickham, N.S.W., died 2.5.1971, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 71, sleeping here), Jack enlisted on the 12th July 1915 with the 4th Battalion at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A69 Warilda on the 8th October 1915.
Admitted to hospital 3.2.1916 (not stated), 22.2.1916 (not stated), 28.7.1918 (not stated).

Wounded in action - 26.9.1917 (GSW right arm).

Commenced return to Australia 8.5.1919.

Jack arrived home on the 26th June 1919, being discharged on the 18th August 1919.

Mr. Riley’s name has been inscribed on the Carrington Citizens' Memorial Gates, Carrington Municipal District Roll of Honor and the Carrington Football Club Roll of Honor.

I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at Jack’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
