Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Youngest of the three brothers (Steve and James) who served in WWI, Sapper George Spry Bartlett (Service No:133) served as a Lieutenant with the Commonwealth Military Cadet Corps (1909), and enlisted in the AIF on 18 August 1914. Sapper Bartlett was attached to 1st Divisional Signal Coy on 20 October 1914 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Suez on board HMAT A10 Karroo. Sapper Bartlett embarked for Melbourne from Suez on 3 February 1915 on board the Kyarra, and was attached to 1st Divisional Signal Coy at Discharge on 4 April 1916 (Medically Unfit). From 11 April 1918 to 9 October 1918, Corporal Bartlett (Service No:172) served in the Royal Australian Naval Brigade Guard Section, and then later served with the Militia (24 April 1930 - 2 March 1931) as a Signaller (Service No:121647). In WWII, Private Bartlett (Service No:Q187373) served in the ACMF (8 December 1939 - 5 March 1940) with 1 Garrison Battalion (QLD) VDC.

Youngest of ten children, George was born in Brisbane QLD in 1889 to Stephen Bartlett (b1847 in Barnstaple, Devon) and Hannah Forbes (b1850 in Queen's County, Ireland). Stephen (a Carpenter) immigrated in 1868, arriving in Brisbane on board the Julie Tatham and settling at Morningside where he established the Sunnyside Store. Hannah immigrated in 1869, arriving in Brisbane on board the Star Queen. Stephen and Hannah married in 1871 in Brisbane, where they settled and raised their family and Stephen was a Storekeeper and Carpenter. In 1895 Stephen was appointed Chief Carpenter with the QLD Marine Defence Force (Warrant Officer; Service No:192), and then served as Inspector of Government Works with the Harbours and Rivers Department - he worked in North Queensland and Thursday Island inspecting, repairing and buliding jetties. During this period the family lived in Maleny, returning to Brisbane by 1911 and Stephen continued his employment as Inspector of Works.

George started work as a Clerk in Brisbane, and in 1911 married Agnes (Allie) Augusta Bowling (b1886 in Brisbane, QLD). George and Allie lived in Brisbane and Charleville, where George was a Plumber and Engineer. Following his Discharge from the AIF in WWI, George and Allie moved to Gunnewin, Mt Hawthorne via Injune, where George was a Soldier Settler. In the late 1920s George and Allie returned to Brisbane - George worked as a Builder and Contractor, and Travelling Salesman before joining the family firm - QR Bartlett Manufacturers, incorporating Bartlett's Street Maps and Transport Directories - as an Engineer and Company Director. George died in 1960 and Allie in 1988.
