Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Staff Sergeant Stephen Forbes Bartlett (Service Nos:229927/Q191708) enlisted in the Militia on 20 December 1938, transferring to the ACMF as a Staff Sergeant attached to AASC Northern Command on 19 July 1940. Staff Sergeant Bartlett served in New Guinea (2 October 1942 - 11 December 1943) with Milne Force Field Cash Office and District Accounts Office NG. In 1944 he was attached to 104 Australian Depot Cash Office, and was attached to District Accounts Office at Discharge on 25 June 1946. Staff Sergeant Forbes (Australian Pay Corps) was awarded The National Efficiency Medal (Military) on 14 November 1946. Father Steve (Service No:38822) served in WWI, and older brother Vic (Service Nos:1384/Q404) served in WWI and WWII.

Stephen was born in Brisbane, QLD in 1900, second of three children of Stephen (Steve) Henry Bartlett (b1875 in Brisbane, QLD) and Isabella (Belle) Mary Moffatt (b1872 in Brisbane, QLD). Steve and Belle married in 1897 in Brisbane, where they settled and raised their family and Steve worked as a Carpenter and Master Tailor. Following his service in WWI, Steve and Belle moved to Amiens via Stanthorpe (Pikedale Soldier Settlement), where Steve was a Farmer. By the late 1920s the family had returned to Brisbane, where Steve worked as a Salesman and Belle as a Shop Assistant. Steve was active in his local community - he was a foundation member of the Kianawa Cricket Club and of the Balmoral branch of the Australian Natives' Association. He was the first Scout Master of the Morningside Company of Boy Scouts, was active in sailing and yachting and in the Brisbane Amateur Athletic Association, and regularly exhibited (and won ribbons) ponies at the Brisbane Show.

Stephen worked as a Wood Machinist in Brisbane, and in 1923 married Dorothy Annie Heymer (b1900 in Warwick, QLD). Stephen and Dorothy settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and Stephen worked as a Machinist until his death in 1959. Dorothy died in 1980.
