Biography contributed by Evan Evans

Up date from Gary Mitchell

“I Once was Lost, but Now am Found”.

On the 7th October 1935, Corporal Hubert Yorke Delahunt, Australian Army Pay Corps (Reg No-6790), accountant from Denman, New South Wales (railway construction) and 53 Perkins Street, Newcastle, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 56. CATHOLIC 2-38. 46.

For 81 years Hubert had been resting in an unmarked grave, another Forgotten Digger of The Great War, so October 2016 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite to honour his service for God, King and Country.

An application for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip submitted January 2020, and was accepted February 2020.
Completed November 2020.

Honour and dignity restored.

The dead are only ever truly forgotten when they are spoken of no more.
Lest We Forget.

Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served during The Great War, soon to be resting peacefully at Sandgate Cemetery.

85 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 7th October 1935, Corporal Hubert Yorke Delahunt, Australian Army Pay Corps (Reg No-6790), accountant from Denman, New South Wales (railway construction) and 53 Perkins Street, Newcastle, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 56. CATHOLIC 2-38. 46.

Born at King William's Town, Cape Colony, South Africa about 1879 to Arthur Woodward and Margaret Mary Delahunt nee Yorke, Hubert enlisted April 1917 with the 17th Battalion at Sydney, N.S.W.
Mr Delahunt did not returned home until January 1920, being discharged on the 1st May 1920.

I have not located Hubert’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

Sadly, Mr Delahunt had been resting in an unmarked grave, forgotten, so October 2016 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service. CATHOLIC 2-38. 46.

An application for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip submitted January 2020, and this was accepted February 2020.

Official commemoration work has begun, and I will post photos when complete.

Served in the Boer War, possibly the Military Police.
Service record states Died after Discharge.

Lest We Forget.
