Son of George Henry BATTS and Emma BATTS nee KING, Minerva, Springsure, Queensland
Husband of Jane Lousia BATTS nee CROWHURST
Alfred George (Alf) Batts was born on 30 September 1889 at Fernlees in the Central Highlands Region of Central Queensland (about 39 kms south of Emerald).
Alf was the 9th of 11 children born to George and Emma Batts and grew up on the family property in the Minerva area north of the town of Springsure.
In November 1915, aged 25, Alf enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force to serve his king and his country during the First World War. He was enrolled into the 5th Light Horse Regiment, 16th Reinforcements and embarked from Sydney in April 1916.
Alf was transferred to the 1st Divisional Ammunition Column in September 1917 and performed the role of driver.
Whilst stationed in England in 1917, Alf courted Jane Louisa Crowhurst of Amersham, Buckinghamshire. They were married at Chertsey, Surrey on 8 August 1917.
After the end of the First World War, Alf and Jane spent some time living in England, before they left and travelled to Australia in April 1919.
Returning to the Minerva / Springsure area, Alf went back to life on the land, working as a shearer.
After a short time, Alf and Jane began their family, going on to parent four (4) boys:
1. Eusebius Henry Batts (25/3/1920);
2. Gurney George Batts (17/12/1921);
3. Basil James Batts (13/3/1926); and
4. Dudley Batts (5/11/1929).
Alf and family continued to live and work in the Minerva / Springsure area until the 1940's.
Alf and Jane were living at and managing the rural property "The Pines" near Somersby, New South Wales during the 1950's.
Alf died on 15 November 1958.
