Son of John Vaughan and Louisa Matilda Vaughan nee Mason of Spensley, Clifton Hill, Victoria. Brother of John Thomas Mason Vaughan who returned to Australia on 24 September 1917 having served with the 12th Light Trench Mortar Battery.

Reginald served with the NZ Garrison Artillery for four years.

Commenced return to Australia on 27 July 1917 aboard HT Euripides disembarking on 29 September 1917
