Leslie was the eldest of three children of William Henry Bentley (b1889 in Gympie, QLD) and Gwendoline Annie Morgan (b1894 in Gympie, QLD). William - a Miner - and Gwendoline married in 1913 in Gympie QLD. In the early 1920s they relocated with their children to Brisbane where William worked as a Labourer until his death in 1938. Gwendoline remarried in 1939.

Leslie was working as a Bus Driver when he enlisted in the Australian Army in March 1941. He was a Corporal (Service Nos:QX42004/Q14357) attached to Australian Entertainment Unit when he was Discharged in May 1946. Brother Ivor Henry (Lance Corporal; Service Nos:QX41492/Q151163) also served in WWII.

Leslie was in Singleton, NSW in 1949 where he worked as a Motor Coach Driver before returning to Brisbane in the early 1950s and working as a Bus Driver. In 1955 he married Elizabeth Eccles (b1920 in Brisbane, QLD) and they settled in Wavell Heights in Brisbane where Leslie worked as an Assistant. Leslie and Elizabeth both died in 1977.
