Geoffrey was the eldest of three children of Ernest Bishop (b1891 in Ipswich, QLD) and Margaret Gertrude Long (b1891 in Brisbane, QLD). Ernest (a Dyer) and Margaret (a Shop Assistant) married in 1915 in Brisbane, QLD. The family lived in Brisbane and Sandgate before moving to Ipswich, QLD in the 1930s, where Ernest worked as a Laundryman.

Geoffrey was a Shop Assistant in Ipswich in 1939 when he enlisted in the ACMF (Lance Corporal; Service No:Q148086) and was attached to 29 Infantry Training Brigade when he was Discharged on 7 March 1943. He then served with 2/3 Commando Squadron from 18 March 1943 (Trooper; Service No:QX49737) and was in Borneo from 2 June 1945 to 10 January 1946. He was Discharged on 18 January 1946.

Geoffrey returned to Ipswich and was working as a Carpenter in 1949 when he married Lola Edith Holland (b1924 in Ipswich, QLD) - Lola worked as a Waitress. In 1958 Geoffrey and Lola moved to Mackay, QLD where Geoffrey worked as a Teacher. Following Lola's death in 1972 Geoffrey remarried. He died in 2001.
