John Henry Edward BELL, (Service Number 2196) was born on 12 May 1886 near Braidwood. He had commenced working with the NSW Railways in January 1913 as a gatekeeper in the Newcastle district and by 1915 had progressed to be a 3rd class shunter at Lismore. He enlisted on the day after Anzac Day at Enoggera in Queensland, as it was probably the nearest enlistment depot.
He left Australia embarked on HMAT ‘Armadale’ in September and disembarked at Alexandria but then moved through Marseilles to France where he was killed in action on 5 August 1916. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux.
