Richard Joseph McCOURT joined the AIF in Adelaide on 11.01 1916 aged 27 and was posted to “A”Company, 2nd Depot, Light Horse Mitcham. On 23.06.1916 he embarked for Overseas duty on HMAT ‘Katuna’. On 14.08.1916 he joined 3rd Machine Gun Squadron in Moascar Egypt. There were no horses at this stage. On 28.10.1916 he was transferred to 3rd Light Horse Machine Gun Squad.

He was with 9th Light Horse Regiment which was part of 3rd Lighthorse Brigade.

From April 1917 till June 1917 Richard spent time in and out of hospital with gastritis, Colic, Pleurisy and Debility (Neurashenia -Shock of War).

From 14.08.1917 till 10.09.1917 he was imprisoned in Cairo, Egypt for providing a false statement and insubordinate conduct to Police in the execution of their duty.

On 15.09.17 he joined the Egyptian Expeditionary Force in Port Said.

In May 1918 he again suffered Debility (Neurashenia) and was eventually sent to Rest Camp in Suez on 14.06.1918. On 17.07.1919 he boarded HT Dunlace Hospital Ship and returned to Adelaide on 19.08.1919.
