Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Henry Lennard was one of three brothers who enlisted, all served in the 55th Battalion and all three fought at Fromelles in July 1916. Two were killed in action during WW1 and the third brother was sent home severely wounded.

They were the sons of Thomas Samuel and Caroline Lennard and lived in the Guildford area of Sydney NSW.

Henry, age 18, enlisted the same day as his older brother Samuel Lennard, and both embarked with the 3rd Battalion AIF. They transferred to the 55th Battalion during early 1916, in the reorganization of the AIF.

An older brother Augustus ‘Gus’ Thomas Lennard, had also enlisted earlier in the 3rd Battalion and transferred to the 55th Battalion during February 1916. His two younger brothers joined him in that unit only a fortnight.

Henry was the only one of his brothers to come through Fromelles unscathed. His brother Samuel was killed in action on the 20 July 1916 and Augustus Thomas Lennard was severely wounded in both arms and had to be returned to Australia in early 1917.

Henry Lennard died in Belgium, still only 20 years of age.
