One of three brothers (Robert, Samuel and David) who served in the Australian Army, Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Henry Jackson served in both WWI and WWII. On 28 August 1914, Second Lieutenant Jackson enlisted in the AIF with 11th Infantry Battalion, and served at Gallipoli Peninsula, where he was Mentioned in Despatches in 1915 for leading one of the attacking parties to take Leane's Trench, and was 'Specially mentioned in Divisional Orders for having performed various acts of conspicuous gallantry or valuable service' (NAA). Captain Jackson served with the 11th and 44th Infantry Battalions at Gallipoli and on the Western Front, and was Mentioned in Despatches, awarded the Military Cross, the Croix de Guerre of the French Republic and the Australian Efficiency Decoration. Captain Jackson was attached to 44th Infantry Battalion at Termination of Appointment on 13 February 1920. In WWII Lieutenant Colonel Jackson (Service No:NX142669) served in the Army from 1 November 1939 to 10 July 1946 with the Australian Intelligence Corps - in 1943 he was appointed Deputy Director of Security for the State of Victoria (Attorney General's Department).
Samuel was born in Bundaberg, QLD in 1892, third of six children of Samuel Bowman Jackson (b1855 in County Antrim, Northern Ireland) and Sarah Haire Woodland (b1860 in County Mayo, Ireland). Samuel Snr and Sarah met in Dublin when they were both studying to become Teachers, and married in Sligo in 1880. They immigrated that year, arriving in Brisbane, QLD on board the John Elder, and lived in Bundaberg and Crows Nest on the Darling Downs, where they raised their family and Samuel Snr was a Teacher and Farmer. In 1906 Samuel Snr and Sarah moved their family to Western Australia, initially to Marradong before settling in Perth where Samuel Snr was a Teacher.
Samuel qualified as a Teacher through the Adelaide Teachers' College and was teaching at Perth Boys' School when he enlisted in the Army in 1914. In 1916 in Perth he married Alice Mabel Archibald (b1887 in Ulmarra, New South Wales) - Alice was a Teacher in Perth. In 1918/1919 Samuel trained in London with the insurance firm of Thornett and Fehr, and was Manager of their Sydney office in 1920. Samuel and Alice settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Samuel worked as a Chartered Accountant and Auditor. Alice worked as a Journalist and Editor, joining the Australian Womens' Weekly in 1933 and was appointed Editor in 1939. In WWII Alice worked as a Journalist and accredited war correspondent, touring defence establishments in Western Australia and Port Moresby, and in 1945 reported on the United Nations (UN) Conference in San Francisco and war damage in Europe. In 1947 Samuel worked for the Department of External Affairs, and served in Occupied Japan where he was Australia's representative on the United Nations Temporary Commission on Korea. By 1954 Samuel and Alice had returned to Sydney, where Samuel resumed work as a Chartered Accountant and Auditor. Samuel died in 1968 and Alice died in 1974. Both their children served in the Military - Hazel in the Air Force and Murray with the Army in Occupied Japan.
