Eldest of three siblings who served in WWII, Lance Sergeant Herbert Charles Brunner (Service No:147735) enlisted in the ACMF as a Private on 28 February 1942 and was posted to 3 Training Coy. Promoted to Corporal on 20 October 1943, he was detached to Camp Staff Wallangarra and then to LHQ Bridging Park. Lance Sergeant Brunner was attached to 15 Works Coy at Discharge on 30 July 1945.
Born in Toowoomba, QLD in 1909, Herbert was ninth of twelve children of Frederick Brunner (b1866 at Middle Ridge, Toowoomba, QLD) and Friederica Wilhelmine Flegler (b1873 at Middle Ridge, Toowoomba, QLD). Frederick and Friederica married in 1892 in Towoomba, where they settled and raised their family. Frederick was a Labourer - and from the 1880s was Licensed to cut firewood.
Herbert worked in Toowoomba as a Wood Depot Proprietor, and in 1939 married Doreen Erbacher (b1917 in Toowoomba, QLD). Herbert - a Painter in 1942 when he enlisted in the Army - and Doreen settled in Toowoomba, where they raised their family and Herbert worked as a Painter. Herbert died in 1981 and Doreen in 1982.
