Born in Murwillumbah, New South Wales in 1908, Bill was third of five children of Herbert Edward Budd (b1879 at Mount Perry via Gin Gin, QLD) and Emily Amelia McGilvray (b1881 at Stroud via Newcastle, New South Wales).
