Sydney was the sixth of seven children of Thomas Henry Burgess (born 1880 in Rockhampton, QLD) and Gladys Maud Dumbrell (born 1883 in Rockhampton, QLD). Thomas -  a Railways Night Officer - and Gladys married in Rockhampton, QLD in 1901. Thomas became a Stationmaster and the family lived in Maxwelton, Balfe's Creek, Longreach, Ayr, Torrens Creek, Hughenden and Gordonvale in QLD.

Sydney worked at Chinbi on the Winton Line in Hughenden, QLD as a Labourer and in 1941 was working at 192 Mile Camp in Hughenden, QLD when he enlisted in the Australian Army. Sydney was a Lance Sergeant (Service No:QX27063) with 26th Infantry Battalion. He was Discharged on 24 December 1945. Brother Kyrle Edward Burgess (Sergeant; Service No:QX30074) and Brothers-in-Law Herbert Buckby (Private; Service No:Q111644) and Ronald William Gerard (Private; Service No:Q112486) also served in WWII.

Returning to Hughenden, QLD Sydney worked as a Line Fettler at 192 Mile Camp and in 1951 he married Kathleen (Cassie) Mary Buckby (born 1918 in Townsville, QLD). Sydney and Cassie settled in Townsville where Sydney worked as a Train Examiner. Cassie died in 1977 and Sydney in 1996.
