The third child of George James and Janetta Merrett. He worked on River Murray passenger vessels as Mate and at the time of enlistment had been on the Steamer Renmark. He was the first Goolwa man to be killed in the First World War. A family notice of his death appeared in the Chronicle newspaper on 20 November 1915, page 38.
