Leslie was the youngest of two sons born to James Clegg (born 1858 in Scotland) and Elizabeth Morrison (born 1871 in Scotland). The family emigrated to Brisbane, QLD in 1910.

Leslie was nineteen years of age and a Motor Driver when he married Heather Estelle Higgins (born 1899 in Maryborough, QLD) in 1924 in Brisbane. Leslie held a number of jobs - including rigger, truck driver and driller - and had served as a Sergeant with the Garrison Artillery (Cadets) prior to enlisting in the Australian Army in 1939. Leslie served with the Independent Brigade Coy ASC and 12th Coy ASC 9th Australian Division as a Staff Sergeant (Service no: QX326), and was Discharged in 1943.

Leslie and Heather settled in Norman Park in Brisbane QLD where Leslie worked as a Clerk. He died in 1968 and Heather in 1981
