John Ruben Furnell enlisted in the AIF as Percival Butler. John is the eldest child of Alfred John Furnell and Ethel Fanny Butler, born on 17 June 1892 at Junee, New South Wales, 5 weeks after his parents married.
John Ruben Furnell married Sarah Emma Hoyland on 22 February 1919 at Hemsworth, Yorkshire, England. The following month on 27 March 1919 John Ruben Furnell declared the name he enlisted with was incorrect and his correct name was John Ruben Furnell. This declaration forms part of his AIF Service Record.
John returned to Australia with his wife Sarah in 1919 where they raised a family. John died at Auburn, Sydney, New South Wales on 24 August 1949 aged 57 his wife Sarah died 16 years later at Burwood, Sydney aged about 75.
