Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

One of three brothers (John and Richard) who served in WWII, Private William David Cooper (Service No:Q151082) enlisted in the Army on 12 February 1942 - classifed Cook - and was attached to 'A' Australian Corps Signals on 12 August 1942 when he embarked from Brisbane for Port Moresby on board USS John Hart. On 5 July 1943 Signalman Cooper embarked from Port Moresby for Cairns on board the Duntroon, and was attached to General Details Depot L of C QLD at Discharge on 5 January 1944.

Bill was born in Brisbane QLD in 1906, third of six children of Phillip Henry Cooper (b1877 in Warwickshire, England) and Amelia Jane Harris (b1881 in Brisbane, QLD). Phillip immigrated in 1887, arriving in Brisbane on board the Jumna. Phillip and Amelia married in 1901 in Brisbane, where they settled and raised their family and Phillip worked as a Fruiter, Dealer and Butcher.

In 1917 Bill was badly burned on his head, neck, shoulders and right arm when a pot of boiling water fell on him. He worked in Brisbane as a Boat Builder and Fisherman before enlisting in the Army, and was a Postal Employee in Brisbane in 1948 when he died.
