Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Samuel Lennard was one of three brothers who enlisted, all served in the 55th Battalion and all three fought at Fromelles in July 1916. Two were killed in action and the third brother was sent home severely wounded.

They were the sons of Thomas Samuel and Caroline Lennard and lived in the Guildford area of Sydney NSW.

Samuel enlisted the same day as his younger brother Henry Lennard, and both embarked with the 3rd Battalion AIF. They transferred to the 55th Battalion during early 1916, in the reorganization of the AIF.

An older brother Augustus ‘Gus’ Thomas Lennard, had also enlisted earlier in the 3rd Battalion and transferred to the 55th Battalion during February 1916. His two younger brothers joined him in that unit only a fortnight.

The three brothers served in C Company of the 55th Battalion at Fromelles and Samuel was reported in his Red Cross file as having been hit badly in the legs by machine gun fire at on the 19 July 1916. His mates covered him with sand bags, but he died overnight and nine days later his body was recovered and buried by a Chaplain in the Rue-Du-Bois Military Cemetery Fleurbaix, France.

His brother 3085 Corporal Augustus Thomas Lennard, 55th Battalion AIF, was severely wounded in both arms at Fromelles, and was returned to Australia, 14 January 1917, medically unfit.

4228 Pte. Henry Lennard 55th Battalion AIF, survived Fromelles but was later killed in action in Belgium 21 October 1917, aged 20.
