An only child, John Jnr was born in Toowoomba QLD in 1915 to John Hamilton Crawford Snr (b1885 in Kerang, Victoria) and Annie Maud McDonald (b1878 in Harrisville, QLD). John Snr (a Medical Practitioner) and Annie (a Nurse at the Children's Hospital) married in 1913 in Brisbane QLD and settled in Toowoomba QLD. In the mid 1920's the family moved to Murilla on the Darling Downs in QLD and then to Brisbane by the mid 1930s.

John was a University Student in Brisbane QLD in December 1941 when he married Karna May Thelander (b1918 in Palmwoods, Nambour, QLD) - Karna was a Nurse at the Brisbane General Hospital. In June 1942 John enlisted in the Australian Army (Captain; Service Nos:QX35638/Q14935). He was attached to 2/7 Australian General Hospital when he was Discharged in April 1946.

John and Karna settled in Pomona QLD where John was a Medical Practitoner until his death in 1949.
