Ronald was the fourth of seven children of Frederick (Fred) Charles Crole (born 1873 in Healesville, Victoria) and Martha (Lena) Helena Phillips (born 1875 in Emerald, Victoria). Ronald's family moved to Trowutta in Tasmania in 1908, and his father was KIA in Belgium in 1917 when Ronald was 11 years of age. Older brother Arthur, who had enlisted in 1915 in the AIF (Service No: 1225) was required to return home to support his mother and siblings.
Ronald had moved to Gympie in QLD and was working as a Timber Getter when he married Ruby Margaret Ormes (born 1905 in Gympie, QLD) in 1929 in Gympie. Ronald and Ruby settled at Horseshoe Bend in Gympie where Ronald was working as a Timber Getter when he enlisted in th Australian Army in February 1942. He served as a Private (Service No: QX44940/Q140253) with 1st Australia Garrison Battalion 2 PoW Guard.
Following his Discharge in November 1945 he worked as a Timber Getter in Kilkivan in Wide Bay, QLD before he and Ruby moved their family to Banyo in QLD in 1949. Ronald worked as a Carter and died in 1979, Ruby died in 1989.
