John Thomas Lyons was born on 27 February 1898 in Murchison, Victoria, the first child of Elizabeth Hannah Ramsay, age 23, and John Thomas Lyons, age 24. He was the oldest brother of Victor 13, Fred 12, Walter 10, Bessie 8, Gordon 6, James 5, Edmond 3, Eileen 2 and baby Valerie.

At age 16 John enlisted in the 3rd Battalion Australian Imperial Force 3rd September 1914, service number 150, stating his age as 19 years 2 months. He stated Victor as his next of kin when he enlisted. John embarked from Sydney onboard Transport A14 “Euripides” on 20th October 1914.

Seven months later John Thomas Lyons died on 19 May 1915 at the Dardanelles, Strait of Gallipoli, Turkey, when he was 17 years. He was buried at the 4th Battalion Parade Ground Cemetery in Gallipoli Turkey.

Johns family received his medals, 1914/15 Star medal, British War medal and Victory medal.

The photo was taken in 1914, the same year he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force.
