Robert was the 2nd of 6 children of Arthur Percival Davies (a Stonemason) and Elizabeth Grace Butler of Brisbane QLD. Robert was living and working in Wynnum QLD as a Diesel Mechanic in 1941 when he enlisted with the Australian Military Forces as a Corporal (Service No: Q1719) and served initially with 5 Corps of Signals, Signals 5 Australian Division. He later served with 1 Australian Advanced Water Craft Workshops AEME, and was in New Guinea from 19 January 1943 to 26 September 1944.

Brother Andrew Sarrail served in the ACMF and sister Elsie in the RAAF.

Robert married Gwendoline Mary in Brisbane, QLD in 1941 and after the War, lived and worked in Brisbane as a Motor Mechanic until his death in 2005
