Artie

Artie as he was known, was born on 29th July, 1921, in Proserpine, the 5th child of William & Nellie Dibben. He attended the Palm Grove & Mt Marlow Schools. He left at the age of 15 & went to work timber cutting for Babe Cutts, & later cut cane for Stan Dunk. He was a keen cricketer & tennis enthusiast. Artie joined the AIF on 23rd March 1942 & became a Gunner. He served in New Guinea at Finschafen, Aitape, Morotai, Port Moresby. Lae, Wewak & on Thursday Island. He also spent some time with the 130 Army General Hospital at Moratai before returning home on the ship Monunda. After the war he worked on Hayman Island for 12 months, then went cane cutting in the Tully area. Artie joined the PMG in 1949, as a linesman & graduated as State Clerk after 32 years of service. He married Nell Winstanley in Mackay on 3rd May. 1952. They lived for some years at Brandy Creek before moving into Proserpine. He retired in 1981, & resided in Hinschen Street, where he enjoyed gardening & fishing.
