William was the youngest of four children (and only surviving son) of William Finlay Field (born 1888 i Bowraville, NSW) and Evelyn Ann McDougall (born 1886 at Bellinger River in NSW). William Snr and Evelyn married in 1910 and settled in Brisbane, QLD where William was a Baker.
William, a Plumber, married Olga Mary Wynn (born 1922 in Brisbane, QLD) in July 1940. He enlisted in the Australian Army in 1941, serving as a Sapper (Service Nos: Q14311/QX21357) with 11th Field Coy, 8 Vehicles Park Workshops and 2/13 Field Coy. William was in the Middle East (16/09/1941 - 27/02/1945) and New Guinea (09/08/1943 - 19/03/1944) and was Discharged in November 1946.
Brother-in-Law Ernest John McTaggart served with the RAAF (Service No:142086).
William and Olga settled at Red Hill in Brisbane where William worked as a Plumber and later as a Cleaner. William died in 1991 and Olga in 2000.
