Son of William John Orr and Alice Teresa Orr nee Grogan of Melbourne, Victoria

Husband of Frances Rae Orr nee Thurlow of Prentice Street, Elsternwick, Victoria. James and Frances were married on 2 September 1914.

Prior to enlisting in the AIF James had served in the Navy for two years.

Commenced return to Australia on 15 February 1918 aboard HT Llanstephen Castle
