Private James Robert Gaffel (Service Nos:Q106027/QX47614) initially served in the ACMF with 47th Infantry Battalion from 13 May 1941 to 1 February 1943, enlisting the following day in the AIF. Craftsman Gaffel - Trade Group Electrician - was attached to 2/4 Base Workshop at Discharge on 4 April 1946.

Jim was born in Bundaberg QLD in 1920, eldest of three children (sons) of Richard James Gaffel (b1899 in Bundaberg, QLD) and Stella May Edwards (b1902 in Bundaberg, QLD). Richard and Stella married in 1920 in Bundaberg, where they settled and raised their family and Richard worked as a Labourer and Sugar Boiler.

Jim was a Sugar Mill Worker in Bundaberg in 1941 when he enlisted in the Army. Returning to Bundaberg following Discharge, Jim was a Sugar Boiler in 1947 when he married Daphne Joyce Walk (b1925 in Bundaberg, QLD). Jim and Daphne settled in Bundaberg, where they raised their family and Jim was a Sugar Boiler until the early 1950s. Jim and Daphne settled at Bingera Plantation via South Kolan, where Jim was a Sugar Cane Farmer, and a member of the local cricket team and the South Kolan School Committee. Jim died in 2004 and Daphne in 2013.
