Ronald was the son of Henry Courtney Gerard Snr (born 1890 in Townsville, QLD) and Janet Myrtle Purves (born 1897 in Townsville, QLD), Henry Snr - a Waterside Worker - and Janet married in 1918 in Townsville, QLD where they settled and raised their family. Henry Snr worked as a Warehouseman and Salesman.
Ronald was an Apprentice Motor Mechanic in Townsville when he enlisted in the ACMF in December 1941. He served (Private; Service No:Q112486) with 115 Reserves Motor Transport Coy AASC and 127 General Transport Coy. Ronald writes in a letter to the ADF in 1991 (National Archives Australia - Service Records) that he was transporting war equipment on Townsville Wharf in July 1942 when the wharf was bombed by the Japanese. Ronald was Discharged in May 1945. Brother Henry Courtney Gerard Jnr (Private; Service Nos:Q111074/QX64935) and Brother-in-Law Herbert Buckby (Private; Service No:Q111646) also served in WWII.
In 1944 in Townsville, QLD Ronald married Iris Irene Buckby (born 1912 in Townsville, QLD). Ronald and Iris settled in Townsville where Ronald worked as a Motor Mechanic. Iris died in 2012 and Ronald in 2015.
